And Dear Reader book club readers do get hooked:
"How do you select the books that you promote? I wanted you to know how much I've enjoyed your online book club. I've bought several books because of it. -- Fred
"I had forgotten how joyful reading was for me. I hadn't read a book in so long. Since I joined the book club and started reading again I feel so much calmer. Thank you for this wonderful book club." -- Anna
"I'm so glad I happened upon your book club. It started me reading again. I was a nonfiction reader, with an occasional fiction read. I've been in the club for awhile now and I've found such interesting books. Recently, on a bus tour to Chicago, the guide on the trip recommended the book, 'Devil in the White City', and I was able to say I had read it because of my Dear Reader online book club." -- Lorraine
Suzanne Beecher, the personality behind the DearReader.com site writes a daily note to readers. Your AuthorBuzz will appear after her column on Monday or Thursday. Even if a book for the week isn't a good match for a reader, they tune in to read Suzanne's column.
"Hi Suzanne, I've been reading with you for about three years now. Even if a book doesn't interest me, I always read your daily column before I hit the delete key. Your writing evokes either a chuckle that brightens my day, or an 'I can soooo relate to that,' nod. I have cried with you, laughed with you, felt your embarrassment, and then you put it all into perspective. You truly are a wise lady. Thanks for all you do." -- Sabine
DearReader.com also goes to over 3000 library systems, servicing approximately 10,000 librarians who use suggestions and pull material from DearReader.com to put into their own newsletters for their patrons.
Every day, Monday through Friday, book club readers receive an email with a 5-minute sample of the featured book of the week. Readers start at Chapter One on Monday morning and by Friday night they've sampled 2 to 3 chapters of a book, enough to know if it's a good match for them. The mission of DearReader.com is to make it easy and fun for people to get back into the habit of reading.
