Mary Balogh

Dear Librarian,

Being a seasoned writer of Regency-era love stories brings certain problems, which I prefer to think of as challenges. How do I keep coming up with new, fresh plots? The answer is, of course, that it cannot always be done. But there is always a new slant to be taken on an old theme, and finding that new angle is endlessly exhilarating.

A MATTER OF CLASS has a familiar theme—the forced/arranged marriage of two young people by parents who will not accept no for an answer and threaten dire consequences if their offspring refuse to comply with their wishes. But my treatment of the theme finds that needed twist to surprise and delight you—or so I hope. What if the two young people concerned are not as powerless as they seem? What if each of them can see and seize a way out of a dilemma that is intolerable to both? But, if they succeed, how can they fall in love and live happily together for the rest of their lives?

I had enormous fun writing this story. I trust you will have as much fun reading it!

Best,
Mary Balogh
