Philip Baruth

Dear Librarian,

For all their differences, James Boswell and Samuel Johnson come together to form one of the great, enduring literary friendships.

But in Boswell's London Journal 1762-1763, there is a single footnote that suggests an untold story. The note concerns Boswell's younger brother John, who went mad in late 1762 and then hurried to London to be with James. Maybe predictably, Boswell kept John hidden away from high society. But in my novel, John discovers his older brother's double life. He begins to stalk James and Johnson about London, gradually revealing his own relationship with the author of the Dictionary — a relationship that is either a desperately held secret or the workings of his own diseased imagination.
