Amy Boesky

Dear Librarian,

How do we define risk? Under the shadow of hereditary ovarian cancer, I tried to speed life up, but couldn't control fate. After my first baby was born, my mother developed breast cancer.

My sisters and I weren't ready to lose her, learn we carry the "breast cancer gene," face the truth about our bodies.

WHAT WE HAVE explores my family's experience with BRCA1. It's not a cancer or a survivor story, though it has cancer and surviving in it. It's about love, loss, and difficult choices—about being a daughter and sister as well as a mother.

Patricia Wood, author of Lottery, says my book "gives so much hope and inspiration that it stirs readers to look inward and examine their own closely held beliefs about fate and destiny."

I hope you will visit www.whatwehave.org to read an excerpt, view the reading guide, and more.

Best,
Amy
