Laura Brodie

Dear Librarian,

Sarah McConnell's husband had been dead three months when she saw him in the grocery store....

That's the first sentence of my debut novel, THE WIDOW'S SEASON, winner of the 2005 Faulkner-Wisdom prize for Best Novel-in-Progress. After reading several 17th-century plays where husbands fake their deaths in order to spy on their wives, I felt inspired to write a modern-day story of a woman who thinks she is being haunted by her husband's ghost. This novel explores love, marriage and grief, following the holiday seasons from Halloween through Easter as Sarah resurrects her own spirit.

You can read the first chapter at laurabrodieauthor.com, or check out a fellow librarian's review at www.ramsey.lib.mn.us/newtitles.htm (see the July 26 listings). I love speaking with library book clubs, so please contact me through my website, and while you're there, sign up for a chance to win a signed copy.

Happy reading,
Laura Brodie
