M.M. Buckner
Dear Librarian,
WATERMIND is a genre bender about characters, regional culture and science.
After winning the Philip K. Dick Award for futuristic SF, I wanted to tackle a present-day story. So I turned to eco-fiction.
I learned that, every day, the Mississippi carries 400,000 tons of technological litter from forty-one states and three Canadian provinces. From this soup, what emerges in my story is the WATERMIND.
The action unfolds at real sites, so after much reading, I explored Louisiana, talked to locals, climbed levees, listened to zydeco and tasted amazing foods.
WATERMIND is about mixing things up to make something new – like the language, music and recipes of the Delta – and the techno-trash.

Cordially,
M.M.
