Dear Librarian, I am delighted to share with you my new book of stories, WE ARE RICH, the follow-up to my 2000 debut novel and LA Times bestseller Beautiful Wasps Having Sex. Why a book of stories? I wanted a dozen characters speaking in the first person – each chapter a new perspective on life in a shared place and time. As a former screenwriter, I've always loved the narrative immediacy of the first person voice because it brings the reader (and writer) inside a character's head without the artifice of the omniscient third person. When my characters begin to speak about one another, magically the dozen stories multiply exponentially, like a house of mirrors. As the voices emerge, so does the quaint California town of Ranch Esperanza where New Money is ascendant and the players find themselves adrift on the ever-shifting seas of status in America. WE ARE RICH foreshadows the kind of arrogance and folly that have led to our current economic free fall. On top of that, it's a rollicking good time. I hope you enjoy it.
