Ingrid Cummings

Dear Librarian,

My new book THE VIGOROUS MIND asks – and answers – that fundamental of questions: How Shall I Spend My Time? The mis-use of our leisure time is one of the undiagnosed maladies of our time. We let too much of our brainpower lie dormant. Making matters worse, we live in an age of excessive specialization. I argue that we need to move past the rut of over-specialization: to "cross-train" our brains.

The major unsung malady of our times is what I call Mental Malnutrition. Neuroscience shows that the brain requires a well-rounded array of pursuits to stay intellectually sharp and emotionally healthy, as well as to resist the ravages of Alzheimer's. THE VIGOROUS MIND is at the forefront of a dawning trend: a corrective move back to glorifying generalists ("Renaissance people") as the vitally important big-picture thinkers we are.

But is it possible to be a "Renaissance person" in our modern era? The ancient eastern philosophy known as kaizen makes it achievable, if you devote as little as 20 minutes a day to cross-training your brain. Let's diversify our brain's portfolio!
