Jill L. Ferguson

Dear Librarian,

This summer Pediatrics published the results of a study that showed more than 17% of the students at Ivy League universities are self-mutilators and self-injurers. In my novel, SOMETIMES ART CAN'T SAVE YOU, cutting is only one of the coping mechanisms 16-year-old Jessica Vandermeyer uses to block out her miserable existence.

Jess knows what it takes to be a great artist: commitment, talent, and experience with suffering. She’s never met her father. Her stepfather killed himself. Her mom, Karen, wears body-clinging Spandex and talks about her incredible sex life - when she’s not behind her firmly closed bedroom door doing it. Concentrating on art usually—but not always—works to keep Jess from feeling shut out and terrified.

Thank you for supporting my work,
Jill L. Ferguson
