Anna Goldsworthy
Dear Librarian,
When I was nine years old, I met a woman who changed my life: Eleonora Sivan, the charismatic Russian émigré and world-class pianist who became my piano teacher. PIANO LESSONS is the story of what she brought to my lessons: a love of music, a respect for life, a generous spirit, and the courage to embrace a musical life: "We are not teaching piano playing. We are teaching philosophy and life and music digested."
I wrote this book to honour my teacher, and to make sense of my musical past, but I have had a range of responses from early readers, each of whom felt it was about something different: anxiety and obsessiveness; the lacerating nature of artistic pursuit; the awkwardness of adolescence... The PIANO LESSONS of the title are not just those of music: they are lessons in life, and I hope they will speak to you, regardless of your musical background.
"Deeply felt and elegantly writtenlike a melody by Mozart: joyous and heartbreaking in a single exquisite line. It is a book of great warmth, sensitivity, and love.
Glenn Kurtz, author of Practicing: A Musician's Return to Music.

All best,
Anna
