Xiaolu Guo
Dear Librarian,
Catcher in the Rye may have been a watershed novel for many of you. And it may surprise you to know that more than a continent away, when I was a child growing up in a small Chinese fishing village, I devoured J.D. Salinger's book as well. As a writer, it gave me the desire to write about a fictional youth in a loud voice – perhaps because in China, youth is diminished by a collective society. It lasts about three years!, after which you're under pressure to get married and find a job and contribute to society. In my new novel TWENTY FRAGMENTS OF A RAVENOUS YOUTH, the heroine Fenfang left a peasant life at the age of seventeen to chase her dreams in modern Beijing; she is in a terrible rush to make the most of her youth before it's too late.
Although the novel isn't published until August, I thought you might enjoy hearing what the critics in the UK have been saying:
"Xiaolu Guo's literary voice remains a breath of the freshest air imaginable." – The Independent
"[A] sharp, unpretentiously sophisticated piece... The story is not so much a slice of life as a sliver, but good things do come in slivers – Parma ham, smoked salmon or truffle-shavings, say. Xiaolu Guo's work is that sort of treat." - Sunday Times
"A delightful peek under the veil of today's China." - Daily Mail
