Meredith Hall
Dear Librarian,
WITHOUT A MAP is a story of banishment, loss, and reconciliation. In 1965, I got pregnant. I was sixteen. Shunned by my family and small New Hampshire community, I was forced to give up my baby for adoption. I drifted, unmoored, for years, finally stitching together a life that encircled my silenced and invisible grief. When he was twenty-one, my lost son found me. Our reunion was tender, turbulent, and ultimately redemptive.
I'm proud to say that WITHOUT A MAP was a 2007 Book Sense Selection, an Elle nonfiction readers' pick, and that Booklist called it "stunning." In fact, I was overwhelmed by both the critical and reader responses to my memoir. Please visit my website, www.meredithhall.org, to read other wonderful reviews, an excerpt, online reading group guide, and more about me. I hope you and your patrons will enjoy the book.
Thanks for your attention,
Meredith Hall
WITHOUT A MAP, the national best-selling memoir, is about loss and grief, and it is about forgiveness and recompense.
Francine Prose said in O Magazine, "Meredith Hall's memoir is a sobering portrayal of how punitive her close-knit New Hampshire community was in 1965 when, at the age of 16, she became pregnant ... Hall offers a testament to the importance of understanding and even forgiving the people who, however unconscious or unkind, have made us who we are."
Caroline Leavitt, of People, gave it four stars and called it a "haunting meditation on love, loss, and family."
David James Duncan, author of The Brothers K and God Laughs and Plays said WITHOUT A MAP is "a masterpiece."
Gayle Shanks at the Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe, AZ called it a "beautifully written, poignant memoir."
It was a New York Times Bestseller, 2007 Book Sense Selection, and an Elle nonfiction readers' pick. Meredith's honors include the Gift of Freedom Award from A Room of Her Own Foundation, a Pushcart Prize, and notable essay recognition in Best American Essays
