Joshua Henkin

Dear Librarian,

I'm delighted that my novel MATRIMONY is being published in paperback this fall. MATRIMONY was a 2007 NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK, a Book Sense Highlight Pick of the Year, and a Borders Original Voices Selection.

In the ten years I spent writing MATRIMONY, I was inspired by a number of books I loved, such as Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections, Richard Russo's Empire Falls, and Ian McEwan's Atonement.

MATRIMONY is about the twenty-year history of a marriage—what happens when a couple meet in college (he's a Wasp from New York City, an aspiring novelist; she's Jewish, from Montreal) and end up marrying earlier than they expected and the ways that their choices (faithlessness, failed ambition, the decision whether to have a child) and things out of their control (health and sickness, the death of a parent) test the endurance of their relationship.

MATRIMONY is a particularly good book for book groups, since it touches on many issues for discussion (the tensions between family and career, interfaith relationships, infidelity, genetic testing, and wealth and class issues). I will visit any book group within driving distance of New York, New Jersey, or Philadelphia, and will otherwise participate by phone or video conference. See my website for the reading group guide for MATRIMONY.
