Keith Hollihan
Dear Librarian,
"Now, let's say the gun went off."
When I started working on THE FOUR STAGES OF CRUELTY that was the line that made me curious enough to see where writing this book would take me. I am interested in consequences and morality, especially when it comes to criminal acts. A book set in a maximum security prison populated by murderers, thieves, drug dealers, and the like was rich with complexity and mystery.
"I can think of no gentle way to begin."
But the book came to life when I discovered the voice of Kali Williams, a female corrections officer in an all-male institution. As an outsider, Kali sees more than her male colleagues, and this leads her to question the right and wrong of routine violence and corruption.
Writing this novel, I was inspired by the work of the great literary thriller writers who explore morality in all its dark dimensions, including Graham Greene, Robert Stone, John Le Carré, Joyce Carol Oates, James Ellroy, Ian McEwan, and Jennifer Egan. Such authors make us question ourselves and our times acutely.
Thanks,
Keith
