Kathryn Johnson

Dear Librarian,

The question was: How do I return a little of the pleasure and comfort so many librarians have given me over the years? The answer finally came to me: Write a novel that anyone who has made a living among books will love. I decided to give it a historical setting. And my subject? Arguably the greatest writer of all time—William Shakespeare. Most importantly, I wanted to make Will accessible to everyone. Not just scholars. Although many readers feel intimidated by Elizabethan language, I believed I knew a way to make Will easy to understand, human.

After four years of research and writing...I hope you'll say I've done my job well. So here you are, my heroes who have brought light into my dark days, knowledge when I needed it, and fun when the day's work wore me thin. This one's for you: THE GENTLEMAN POET. Enjoy!
