Dear Librarian,
I began writing A DISORDER PECULIAR TO THE COUNTRY in the aftermath of September 11, when I was particularly troubled by the clichés of sanctimoniousness that had enveloped the tragedy. Given what we know about marriage and divorce, is it cynical to suppose that if 3,000 people were killed that day, then there must have been at least a few gratified spouses? And a few who were disappointed when their husbands and wives returned unharmed?
My novel opens with that thought and hurls my bitterly divorcing couple through this and other garish events of our recent history. The point is satirical, of course, a black comedy of war, terrorism and conjugal strife.
