Kim MacQuarrie

Dear Librarian,

For hundreds of years, the story of the legendary Inca city of Vilcabamba lay buried in old Spanish chronicles. The ancient records tell of a young Inca king, Manco Inca, who fled deep into the Amazon jungle after the Spaniards conquered his empire. There Manco built a city and for the next 36 years fought a desperate guerrilla war, until the Spaniards finally overwhelmed the city in 1572.

More than 300 years later, an American explorer, Hiram Bingham, stumbled on the ruins of Machu Picchu, and announced to the world that he had found the Incas' lost rebel capital. But had he?

My book, THE LAST DAYS OF THE INCAS, tells the epic story of how Francisco Pizarro and 168 Spaniards somehow managed to topple an Inca Empire of ten million. It also tells the little known story of the Incas' massive rebellion, and of the fierce guerrilla war the Incas launched against the invaders. Finally, it tells the story of how both Machu Picchu and the Incas' secret capital were discovered in modern times by a trio of colorful American explorers.

Publisher's Weekly, in a "Starred Review," described my book (a History Book Club and Military Book Club selection) as "Vivid...energetic...fascinating...riveting." The Kiriyama Prize Committee recently selected it as a "notable book" for 2008. And Entertainment Weekly stated simply that THE LAST DAYS OF THE INCAS is "thrillingly informative...narrative gold." I hope you will recommend it to your readers.

Please feel free to check out www.lastdaysoftheincas.com/wordpress, my blog dedicated to exciting new discoveries in the Andes and the Amazon, as well as my website, www.lastdaysoftheincas.com, where you can find a list of reviews, awards, a Q & A, and additional information about the book.

Thanks very much for furthering the cause of good reading!
