Dear Librarian,
I started writing THE GIANT'S HOUSE while I was in library science school, instead of paying attention in cataloguing class. After graduation, I became the Circulation desk chief at the Somerville (Mass.) Public Library, a job I still miss all these years later. It fell to me to clean the grubby covers of returned books, and I dreamt of my own book coming back filthy and weak in the binding and well-loved.
Now THE GIANT'S HOUSE is 11 years old, and it's been ten years since I've worked in a public library, though it's like being a mobster: you're never really out. My book is about a librarian crabbier than I was then but better at her job, who falls in love with her unlikeliest patron. I hope it finds a home in your library. I hope it's never misshelved. I hope you circulate it till it falls apart.
