Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Krous
Dear Librarian,
What is everyday life like for the women who inspire iconic songs?
What must it feel like for them to hear intimate details of their
personal lives play out over the loudspeaker of the grocery store or
blasting from the jukebox. In the summer of 2004, the pop star
Usher released his multi-platinum album Confessions, chronicling his
break-up with fellow musician Chilli. The songs were on
constant radio rotation, and we couldn’t help but wonder where she was and
how she felt about it.
So inspired by Chilli, we wrote the story of Kate Hollis, whose
boyfriend, Jake Sharpe, disappeared twelve years ago, days before the
prom, only to resurface when his song Losing-about his and Kate's
first sexual experience-shot to the top of the Billboard charts. Now he’s
finally returned to their hometown for an MTV special. The moment she
has been waiting for, to make him regret his entire existence, has
arrived.
It’s the ultimate break-up story-we hope you and your readers enjoy.
Thanks so much for your ongoing support!
Yours,
Emma and Nicola
