Katherine Neville

Dear Librarian,

My love affair with libraries began twenty years ago, as a writer in California, when my first book, THE EIGHT, was launched at a wonderful black-tie fundraiser for the San Jose California Public Library—and that love continues right down to this year, with wonderful events for my sequel, THE FIRE, at my present local libraries: the Library of Virginia and the Library of Congress!

The spectacular chess game in THE EIGHT—a quest for the bejeweled chess set that once belonged to Charlemagne—has continued to captivate readers around the world with its exotic locales, fascinating historic figures, and complex plot. Long a library classic, due to its unique themes, Publishers Weekly recently credited THE EIGHT with having "paved the way" for the re-emergence of a timeless genre: the Quest novel.

Today, that 'Game' resumes, in force, in my long-awaited sequel: THE FIRE. When the most critical piece of Charlemagne's chess set, the Black Queen, suddenly emerges, the quest leads us from 8th-century Baghdad to the wilds of Colorado, to Albania, Russia, Rome, Morocco—and into a secret wilderness that almost no one knows, hidden at the very heart of Washington DC.

I am delighted that THE FIRE has spent six months atop bestseller lists around the world, and I'm honored that it has garnered dozens of wonderful reviews like these: "THE FIRE impresses as much for its literary aspects as it does for its action, puzzles and suspense...This is a book to be savored as it's read, and admired for the beauty of its accomplishment." —Chicago Sun-Times; "An exotic, labyrinthine conspiracy tale...the perfect escapist adventure" —The Washington Post.

I look forward to hearing from you!
