Stacey Patton
Dear Librarian,
THAT MEAN OLD YESTERDAY is a story about a little black girl who gets plucked from New Jersey's foster care system and adopted by what seemed to be a suitable middle-class African American preacher and his wife. Behind the facade of their well-kept home, I endure years of physical and psychological abuse. Eventually I run away to save my life.
After years of being shuffled from one foster home after another, I finally build upon my strength and determination to take control of my own life and prospects by earning a full scholarship to one of the nation's most prestigious boarding schools.
My book is not only a coming-of-age story, but also one about personal triumph and redemption in the face of adversity. I not only embrace my own past, but also my abuser's past and the painful and triumphant history of African Americans to understand the generational impact that slavery and racism had on the way my adoptive parents raised me.
