John Pipkin
Dear Librarian,
My novel, WOODSBURNER, is based on a forgotten forest fire started by Henry David Thoreau in 1844, a year before he built his cabin at Walden Pond. The fire destroyed three hundred acres of the Concord Woods and altered the landscape of American thought in a single day.
During the fire, Thoreau's path intersects with three locals haunted by their own unfulfilled dreams: Oddmund Hus, a farmhand pining for the woman he cannot have; Eliot Calvert, a bookseller and inept aspiring playwright; and Caleb Dowdy, an opium-addicted fire-and-brimstone preacher.
Sena Jeter Naslund (Ahab's Wife) said: "Witty, bawdy, philosophical, touching, and humorous, Woodsburner is a novel I didn't want to end . . . This book is packed with interesting ideas, vital characters, and vivid writing."
Find out what Doris Kearns Goodwin, Ron Rash (Serena) and others have said about WOODSBURNER by visiting my website: www.johnpipkin.com.
