Julie Schumacher
Dear Librarian,
Depression is increasingly common, particularly among women and adolescents. It is also dangerous: suicide is almost twice as common as homicide in the US. But embarrassment – and the belief that depression is a "personal weakness" – keeps more than a third of those who suffer from depression from seeking treatment.
I wrote BLACK BOX, in part, to shed light on the shame and confusion that too often accompany mental illness. This is not a bleak or hopeless book – Judith Guest, author of Ordinary People, calls BLACK BOX "witty and spare" – but it challenges the reader to reconsider attitudes toward mental illness.

"Schumacher's books ring with genuine and true memories, and her technical skills put her among the top middle-grade and YA writers working today.... I am more impressed than ever by Schumacher's work, which ranks right up there with the best the field has to offer."
