Jennie Shortridge

Dear Librarian,

Those of you who've read my books and recommended them for book clubs know that I focus on the interior of my characters' lives, studying the cracks and fault lines, mining them for hope and redemption, love and connection.

With my new novel, WHEN SHE FLEW, I've stepped a little further out into the world to write a story inspired by true events, but still with an inward focus. Police officer Jessica Villareal is drawn into the case of an Iraq-war vet raising his 13-year-old daughter in the Oregon woods. As she tries to determine what is best for the girl, she must come to terms with her own daughter and summon the courage to break the rules she has sworn to uphold in order to do what she believes is right.

Book clubs will have much to discuss with this one and its themes of parental love and duty, providing safety in an unsafe world, the treatment of returning war vets, and, of all things, birds! I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed researching and writing it.

With gratitude for all you do,

Jennie Shortridge
