Dear Librarian,
Have you ever had a dream and kept it secret because you were afraid what others might think about you? Or because you were afraid of failure? Meet Whitney Lee, Hercules Huang and Audrey Henley, friends who graduated from high school as co-valedictorians. Now in their late twenties, these Asian-American women struggle to reconcile their own desires with the rigid, traditional and professional expectations placed on them by their parents, their peers, their friends and themselves. For them, this means choosing between a risky existence as a singer instead of an upwardly mobile career at a law firm; craving a better relationship with a first-generation, unassimilated Chinese father who refuses to understand his daughter's way of life; and marrying a man who doesn't fit the socio-economic status of class conscious parents. Through their friendship, they realize that success doesn't mean perfection or universal approval, but simply giving it a shot.
Thank You,
Christine Son
