Tom Sullivan
Dear Librarian,
Over the years, librarians have been remarkable in their support of books I have been fortunate enough to write. From the first biography of Tom Sullivan, If You Could See What I Hear, that won numerous American Library Awards, to my children's books and now ALIVE DAY, librarians have brought all of my inspirational work to public attention, and there is no way I can thank you enough for your support.
ALIVE DAY is the second in a series of novels featuring Dr. Brenden McCarthy, a blind psychiatrist, and Nelson, his black Labrador retriever guide-dog. In this work, Dr. McCarthy takes a position practicing in a Veteran's Hospital in Seattle working with wounded Iraq returnees suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)—most particularly, a young African-American man from South Central LA named Antoine Carver. Corporal Carver is a paraplegic who has also lost his sexual function and believes that nothing in his life holds any value. On the edge of suicide, Dr. McCarthy battles to find the button that can bring Carver back into life. It's only through the engagement of Nelson as a therapy dog that Carver believes once again that love is possible and that maybe—just maybe—he can find purpose in his life.
The title ALIVE DAY comes from a tradition maintained in the Marine Corps to present men returning wounded from war with an Alive Day cake, much like our birthday tradition, on the anniversary marking his survival. In an ironic twist, Dr. Brenden McCarthy and Nelson are faced with their own moment of truth and must struggle against almost insurmountable odds to survive and return to their family.
ALIVE DAY is a deeply intense and emotional work that we believe is fit for a broad range of readers and we hope can be meaningful as one of your library selections.
Thank you for supporting my lifetime of work and most particularly ALIVE DAY by Tom Sullivan.
