Charles Taliaferro
Dear Librarian,
There is a splendid phrase to describe a work of art that is created in particular circumstances: such work is made in situ. In a sense, these essays were each written in situ, occasioned by specific events that are odd or embarrassing, like sleepwalking late at night in a busy hotel, or tragic, like the death of a parent. . . . But they were written in an effort to touch on wide themes, such as the pathetic futility of vanity, the awakening of faith, and the surprising consolation and joy to be found in friendship. To summarize the overall goal of this collection, my aim is the exploration of different aspects of love.
