Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez
Dear Librarian,
I should tell you before I begin here that I often invoke your names when I travel around the country talking about the dangers of stereotyping. To the surprise of many, I say that librarians are at the top of my list of Americans who are often unustly stereotyped.
Last year, I attended a rally in Salinas, Calif., to stop the city from closing down the public libraries. There, I held hands with librarians. They reminded me that it is our social duty to give books to the poor.
Finally, I should say I love librarians because they do things like give me starred reviews in the Library Journal for my new book! Yay! Did you see it? If not, here’s a taste: "Each section of Valdes-Rodriguez's hard-to-put-down book is told from the viewpoint of a different, well-developed character, and Miami comes to life through her perfectly chosen details. As with her other books, Valdes-Rodriguez skillfully and lovingly illustrates the diversity of Latino culture."
Aww. Que nice. Thanks, guys. For being there, for believing everyone deserves books, and for your support.
