Dear Reader,

Imagine the thrill of being asked to create a book with more than a dozen of the best crime writers in the world. That's how the two novels that make up WATCHLIST came about. The premise was simple: I wrote the first chapter and handed it off to the next author, who took the story wherever he or she wanted, and so on, until the novel returned to me to add the final chapter and work in some of those surprise endings I love so much.

In the first of these two stories, The Chopin Manuscript, former Army intelligence officer Harry Middleton reunites a group he formed years ago to hunt war criminals. An ethnic cleanser from the conflict in the former Yugoslavia has surfaced, and Middleton's crew has to track him down. With a mysterious stolen music manuscript at the center of the tale, this thriller speeds from Poland to London to Italy to the United States. The second of the tales, The Copper Bracelet, drops Harry and his team into the middle of the conflict between India and Pakistan, after an enigmatic and brilliant scientist sets in motion a plot for Kashmiri independence. Again, the lightning-fast story takes you through exotic locations dear to the authors' hearts.

The good guys are appealing and sharply drawn, the villains shrewd and nasty, and the plot twist will make you dizzy. But what else would you expect from a gang of seasoned thriller writers like these?

On behalf of all who contributed, I'd like to thank you for your interest in our writing.... and apologize in advance for the lack of sleep you'll experience once you pick up WATCHLIST.

All best,
Jeffery Deaver
