Dear Reader,
MERCY STREET, my May 2008 hardcover, is a departure from the FBI books I've been writing for eight years, and marks the beginning of an exciting new series with all new characters.
On a warm spring evening, four high school seniors entered a park in Conroy, PA. The following morning, two were found shot to death, the other two were missing, and the police concluded that one of the missing kids was the shooter.
Local parish priest Father Kevin Burch turns to his cousin and best friend, wealthy recluse Robert Magellan, to fund a private investigation into the disappearance of the two teenagers, one of whom was the grandson of the church's secretary.
With Robert's backing, Father Kevin hires a former cop, Mallory Russo, to find out what really happened that night. She teams up unofficially with city detective Charlie Wanamaker to uncover the truth and find the two missing kids. Charlie and Mallory are forced to put their personal demons aside as they follow a twisted path that leads to an old unsolved murder and a vengeful killer with a heart of stone.
At Father Kevin's urging, Robert establishes the Mercy Street Foundation, a private firm set up to investigate missing persons cases that have gone cold. He'll hire the best and brightest from different areas of law enforcement to crack the unsolvable cases and bring home the lost – living or dead. Robert's motive isn't totally altruistic: eighteen months ago, his wife and only child disappeared, and despite the best efforts of law enforcement, no trace of his family has been found.
I think MERCY STREET has just the right balance of suspense, mystery and romance to make it a perfect summer read. I hope that you'll agree, and that you'll enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!
Best
