I was inspired to write DIAMOND RUBY after learning the true story of Jackie Mitchell, the teenage girl who struck out Babe Ruth—and was immediately banned (along with all women) from baseball. By creating Ruby, setting her against such adversaries as gangsters, rum-runners, even the KKK, and giving her such real-life friends as Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey, I was able to allow her to do what Jackie Mitchell never could: fight back against those who would stop her. The result is a novel that the Washington Post called "lively and entertaining" and Library Journal named "a literary gem." And New York Times bestselling author Laura Lippman says "Ruby is a wonderful, memorable character and Wallace's prose is a perfect match for her." DIAMOND RUBY is a trade paperback, making it affordable for book groups.
