Joseph Wallace

Dear Reader,

New York City in the 1920s was like a vast ocean swirling with treacherous currents: It was far easier to drown than to stay afloat. But in my debut novel, DIAMOND RUBY, young Ruby Thomas, newly responsible for her two nieces after a devastating tragedy, is determined to keep her family safe. She's got street smarts, boundless determination, and one great skill: the ability to throw a ball as hard as the greatest pitchers in baseball-mad city.

I was inspired to write DIAMOND RUBY after learning the true story of Jackie Mitchell, the teenage girl who struck out Babe Ruth—and was immediately banned (along with all women) from baseball. By creating Ruby, setting her against such adversaries as gangsters, rum-runners, even the KKK, and giving her such real-life friends as Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey, I was able to allow her to do what Jackie Mitchell never could: fight back against those who would stop her.

The result is a novel that the Washington Post called "lively and entertaining" and Library Journal named "a literary gem." And New York Times bestselling author Laura Lippman says "Ruby is a wonderful, memorable character and Wallace's prose is a perfect match for her."

DIAMOND RUBY is a trade paperback, making it affordable for book groups. I'd be delighted to visit any book group in the New York area; if I can't visit in person, I'd be glad to visit via Skype or telephone. I've already had a wonderful time visiting with several book groups, and would love to do more.

I'm conducting a drawing for FIVE FREE COPIES of DIAMOND RUBY. Please write me at josephwallace@josephwallace.com, with the subject line 'Diamond Ruby Contest'. If you recommend a book to me that you loved, I'll enter your name twice in the contest. (Deadline for the contest is August 31.)
