Dear Librarian: Writing CHARLES AND EMMA was a labor of love. First, the labor: I used almost entirely primary sources, pouring over scores of letters, journal entries, and diary scribbles, to find the story of their marriage. I loved every minute of it. And in the process, I fell in love with the Darwins themselves. What a great love they shared, great enough to overcome their huge difference in religious belief.
