Deborah Heiligman
Dear Librarian:
Writing CHARLES AND EMMA was a labor of love. First, the labor: I used almost entirely primary sources, pouring over scores of letters, journal entries, and diary scribbles, to find the story of their marriage. I loved every minute of it. And in the process, I fell in love with the Darwins themselves. What a great love they shared, great enough to overcome their huge difference in religious belief. I have been thrilled that librarians all over the country have loved the book, too. It got five starred reviews! Thank you for putting it into the hands of so many readersfrom ages 11 to 87. I hope you will continue to do so, especially since the 150th anniversary of Darwin's THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES is this November. I believe Charles wrote the book with Emma in mind, which makes it the brilliant and polite argument that it is.
