Carolyn MacCullough

Dear Librarian:

I always hid in the library during gym class. So when I decided to take up running three years ago, I should have known better. But being a (pseudo) runner led me to discover Tamsin Greene, the 17 year-old protagonist of my YA urban fantasy, ONCE A WITCH.

Every day (okay, almost every day) for two weeks I huffed and gasped my way through brownstone Brooklyn. Until one day I noticed this particular brownstone that had a little gargoyle statue sitting out front. He seemed to be grinning at me. So I started to wonder, what stories could this little gargoyle tell me if he could talk? Then I started thinking about a character that had the Talent to make inanimate objects talk. Three torturous blocks later, I started hearing the voice of a character who didn't have any magical Talent, but who had the misfortune to be born into a family that was completely Talented. Even worse, she was supposed to have been one of the most Talented, but that prophecy just didn't come true. How did she feel about that? Who was this character and what was her story?

And then I promptly ran home and started typing.

"[MacCullough] has created an enormously sympathetic character in Tamsin, whose itchy relationship with her family will resonate with teens struggling to define themselves. Characters, setting, conflict—all develop nicely to create a light urban fantasy that goes down easy and will have readers asking for its sequel."—Kirkus Reviews

"With the glut of contemporary romantic supernatural tales, this will be popular, but the action, drama, and great potential for compelling sequels set it apart from the crowd."—Booklist
