Dear Librarian: My Grandma Hanneh used to sit me down, hold my hand, and tell me the most amazing stories inspired from The Arabian Nights, adding her own spice and colour. I read different versions long before I wrote my own. Some were in Arabic, others in French or English. I wanted my version to have a distinct Arabic flavour. I chose stories that showed how women were helpful and clever—not just liars and cheats like King Shahriyar thought. Queen Scheherazade saves the lives of all the women in the kingdom and changes the heart of a bitter man, making him a good king.
