Jay Asher

Dear Reader:

When I hear from someone who overslept and missed their bus because they stayed up until 2 a.m. reading my book, I'll admit, it does make me smile.

My goal with THIRTEEN REASONS WHY was to grab the reader's attention and never let go. The book deals with some very serious issues, and I wrote about those issues as honestly as possible. But I believe the best stories are just as entertaining as thought-provoking.

When Clay Jensen first receives an anonymous box of audiocassettes, he's excited...until he presses play. Out comes the voice of Hannah Baker, his classmate and crush. Two weeks earlier, Hannah committed suicide. On each side of each tape, she talks about a person at their school who she feels led to her decision to take her life.

"And if you're listening to these tapes, you're one of the reasons why."

Don't stay up too late,
Jay Asher
