So when I first read BEAUTIFUL BALLERINA, a poem by Marilyn Nelson, goose bumps jeted down my spine. I had to photograph this book! The poem is about dance, for sure, but also so much more. My mission was to capture the meaning and the joyous spirit of the poem. Not easy, but hey, exciting things rarely are. To that end, I chose students from The Dance Theatre of Harlem, beautiful ballerinas all, to represent the themes of the poem. They "danced" the poem. Did you know that you can dance a book? Try it.
