Holly Goldberg Sloan

Dear Reader:

I have two sons and they started off in a regular, public school, but ended up in a school for gifted children.

This happened because my oldest son took a test and did very well in all things related to math. You could say he almost did too well because after that, the teacher looked at him in a different way and thought he should leave her class and go be with older kids to learn about numbers.

My oldest son was small for his age and shy. Plus he had bright red hair. He already felt different and the idea of leaving his second grade class everyday frightened him.

We ended up finding another school for my son and from that experience I got a bigger understanding of how putting someone in a group or a category can be very complicated.

COUNTING BY 7S is about serious things, but it is meant to also be funny. Many difficult situations in life are easier to understand if you can laugh.

I hope that if you read this book, you will find ways through the story to feel things. That is the essence of the human experience.

"Bright and heartfelt [...] an uplifting story." —Kirkus Reviews

"What sets this novel apart from the average orphan-finds-a-home book is its lack of sentimentality, its truly multicultural cast (Willow describes herself as a "person of color"; Mai and Quang-ha are of mixed Vietnamese, African American, and Mexican ancestry), and its tone. . . . Poignant." — The Horn Book (starred review)
