Dear Librarian,
Ten years ago, I saw my first Pan Yuliang painting. The workCezanne-esque, and yet built on Chinese brushstrokesfascinated me; but not nearly as much as Pan's own story: sold into a brothel at 14, she eventually studied and exhibited in Paris and was known for her lush (and often nude) self-paintings. It was a jaw-dropping journey, all but undocumented in the West, and both sketchy and contested in China.
So I set out to paint it for myself.
The result, THE PAINTER FROM SHANGHAI, has been praised as "luminous...an irresistible story" (New York Times), "engrossing... [with] spotless pace, vivid characterization and often-breathtaking descriptions... spellbinding" (The Chicago Tribune), and "sparkling...lush" (Vogue). It is also a Barnes and Nobles "Discover Great New Writers" pick, and a Penguin UK Readers Group Pick. I hope you and your readers will be equally enthusiastic!
