Dear Reader,

Have you ever been so moved by a painting that you had to learn more?

Ten years ago this Spring I saw my first Pan Yuliang self-portrait. The work—Cezanne-esque, and yet built on classic Chinese brushstrokes—fascinated me. So did the accompanying bio: Pan (I learned) had studied and exhibited in Paris, and was known for her bold—and often nude—self-portraits. And yet she'd started out in a Chinese brothel.

What sort of a woman makes that journey?

The next ten years became a kind of quest—of research, of the imagination—to find out. The result, THE PAINTER FROM SHANGHAI, has been praised as "luminous...an irresistible story" (New York Times), "engrossing... [with] spotless pace, vivid characterization and often-breathtaking descriptions... spellbinding" (The Chicago Tribune), and "sparkling...lush" (Vogue). It is also a Barnes and Nobles "Discover Great New Writers" pick and a Penguin UK Readers Group Pick.
