Laila Halaby
Dear Librarian,
I have always believed that if other people could see my world, could see a Palestinian, Arab, or Muslim, from the inside, then they couldn't have such negative stereotypes. I don't have an agenda as a writer, but I do believe that it is my responsibility to offer an honest and challenging story. ONCE IN A PROMISED LAND is my offering.
ONCE IN A PROMISED LAND is the story of Jassim and Salwa, who left the deserts of their native Jordan for those of Arizona. In the wake of 9/11, when Jassim kills a teenage boy in a terrible accident and Salwa becomes hopelessly entangled with a shadowy young man, their tenuous lives in exile and their fragile marriage begin to unravel.
ONCE IN A PROMISED LAND was a Book Sense Notable Title and a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Selection. It was "highly recommended for both public and academic libraries" by Library Journal. Carolyn See, a wonderful novelist and critic, called it "brilliant, insightful, heartbreaking, [and] enchanting." Andre Dubus and Rosellen Brown also made very strong endorsements for the book; I hope you will visit my website, www.lailahalaby.com, to see them and for an online readers' guide.
I hope you and your patrons will enjoy this book.
