Laila Halaby

Dear Reader,

My new novel is the story of a couple caught in two very dangerous webs: one of their own making (the lies they have told each other) and the other totally out of their control (the anti-Arab paranoia that swept the country after 9/11). Salwa is unhappy in her life, gets pregnant, and miscarries, without telling her husband. Jassim has a horrible accident, but does not tell his wife in an effort to protect her. Both of them turn to unlikely, and in Salwa's case, dangerous, other people for support. On top of all of this, they are Arab-Americans who live in Tucson, but are profoundly affected by the fear and suspicion directed at them after the terrorist attacks. Andre Dubus, who wrote House of Sand and Fog, called my novel "a deeply resonant tale of our tangled and common humanity," and in the Washington Post Carolyn See said it is "brilliant, insightful, heartbreaking, [and] enchanting."
