Dear Librarian, More than 550,000 people in the UK are on the autistic spectrum, and yet few people have any idea or understanding of the condition. When my boys were diagnosed as having Asperger Syndrome and autism respectively, I had very little knowledge of how our lives would be affected or how poorly prepared our educational system was to cope with autism. In all, 26 special schools turned away my boys and it was left to my husband and I to take a huge gamble by setting up our own school, a Centre of Excellence, for those on the autistic spectrum. NOT STUPID describes the highs and lows of our campaign to provide a decent level of education and support for our boys and how we have since established a Middle School, a college and a residential centre to cope with the demand for placements following the success of our initial project.
