Holly Shumas

Dear Librarian,

In recent years, the topic of emotional infidelity has been one of increasing interest and sometimes controversy. As a practicing marriage and family therapist as well as a novelist, it's a subject that I loved taking on in my new novel, LOVE AND OTHER NATURAL DISASTERS. It tells the story of Eve, who's eight months pregnant when she discovers her husband has been having an intimate (though non-sexual) relationship for the past year with another woman. What I most enjoyed about writing the novel and I expect will spur thought and discussion for readers are the many ambiguities: Where is the line between a close friendship and an emotional affair? Which is the greater betrayal, emotional or sexual intimacy? The novel raises questions about intimacy, fidelity, and forgiveness and there's a reading group guide in the back, making it a natural for book clubs.

Thanks for reading!
Holly
