Dear Reader,Where is your home?
I ask the question, because I've been trying to work out where my home is for the last eight years or so.
I'm an Englishman. I moved to the United States in 2003 with my family, and have been living here ever since. I drew on my immigrant experience when writing my novel, A GOOD AMERICAN. The book tells the story of a young couple, Frederick and Jette Meisenheimer, who leave their native Germany at the start of the last century in search of a new life in the United States.
In some ways, my experience of moving here could not have been more different to Frederick and Jette's journey a hundred years earlier. But I think we shared certain emotions: the hope for a better life, the fear of the unknown, and the paradox of wanting to adapt without forgetting where you came from. I know that a part of me will always be looking back across the Atlantic, towards England and my family who remain there.
