Julie Schumacher

Dear Reader,

I started writing BLACK BOX because a person very close to me was struggling through some difficult years in the valley of the shadow of depression. Like other forms of mental illness, depression often brings with it the added and very toxic burden of shame.

In part, I wanted to write BLACK BOX in order to alleviate that burden of shame. I wanted to shed light on what many of us prefer not to acknowledge or discuss.

Judith Guest, author of Ordinary People, calls BLACK BOX "witty and spare" and writes, "I love this novel." Andrew Solomon, author of The Noonday Demon, calls BLACK BOX "a vivid, intimate portrait... written with passionate clarity."

I'll give away signed copies to five readers who tell me why sad books can sometimes make us feel better. Thanks for reading.
