Actually, I was trying to avoid being ugly. When I truly understood and accepted that I am ugly, it almost broke my heart. But coming out of denial also let me see that I been suffering from an unnamed fear – I call it ugliphobia – for as long as I could remember. This fear is caused by the overwhelming pressure to be beautiful, and the bigotry directed at those who fall short. And here's the big news: everyone I know lives with this fear because according to the impossible standards of the day, everyone is ugly.
