Joel Derfner
Dear Reader,
I'm excited to tell you that my book SWISH: MY QUEST TO BECOME THE GAYEST PERSON EVER AND WHAT ENDED UP HAPPENING INSTEAD has been released in paperbackand not only that, it's got a foreword by Elton John!
I'm a knitter, an aerobics instructor, a cheerleader, a go-go dancer, and a musical theater composer, but when I realized one day that I was a walking gay cliché I embarked on a quest for deeper meaning. A very, very funny quest for deeper meaning (if I do say so myself). And as I was confronting the demons of my past at a GLBT summer camp, using the Internet to "meet" men, and going undercover to a conference of ex-gays, I discoverd that what I was looking forand sometimes even foundwas my own identity.
If you're a fan of David Sedaris, Augusten Burroughs, David Rakoff, Chelsea Handler, Sloane Crosley, or Sarah Vowell, you'll probably like my book. If you're not, what the heck, you'll still probably like my book. And if you don't like it, then I'll overwhelm you with waves of insecurity and need until you're forced to change your mind!
Send an e-mail about the gayest thing you've ever done (whether you're straight, gay, bisexual, or other) to joel@joelderfner.com, and you might win one of five signed copies of SWISH. Stop by joelderfner.com to sign up for my irregularly scheduled but charming newsletter and to learn about the secret SWISH blog. You can also watch a the video trailer for SWISH at tinyurl.com/swishvideo. If your book club is interested in SWISH I'd love to join your conversation by phone or video conference, and if your group reads the book in 2009 I'll even send a tin of my homemade brownies (which are great no matter what the Centers for Disease Control say).
Yours in good books,
Joel Derfner
