Joanna Hershon

Dear Reader,

One summer evening, I was at a barbeque, and the conversation turned toward relatives. A friend of mine said, half-jokingly, "My ancestors were Jewish cowboys. They went west because there were too many Jews in New York!" I grilled him about what he knew, which was very little, but he did mention that his great-great-grandmother was a famous ghost in Santa Fe. This was enough to spark my interest, which—after five years of fascinating research, evolved into my novel, THE GERMAN BRIDE, which has recently had a paperback release.

Inspired by many non-fiction sources as well as Wallace Stegner's much-beloved Angle of Repose, my new novel, THE GERMAN BRIDE, is a new look at the American West. It explores the brutal Santa Fe Trail, as well as the isolation and grit and sometimes-surprising refinement of life on the Southwestern frontier. It is the answer to the question: why would a privileged young woman from Berlin agree to join her life with a headstrong merchant and move half-way across the world? (Hint: it isn't because of love, or at least not exactly...)

I encourage you to write to me at contact@joannahershon.com and be one of five people to receive a signed gift paperback copy of THE GERMAN BRIDE. I am also interested in your family histories and am holding a special contest: the writer of the best-told family immigration story will receive a signed hardcover copy as well as a paperback copy. Please also visit my website: www.joannahershon.com to learn more.

Many Thanks,
Joanna Hershon
