I’m also familiar with the Pacific Island of Bougainville having visited immediately after the military blockade was lifted. I never imagined myself combining the two things to make a novel. Somehow, almost in spite of myself, Great Expectations and Bougainville found one another in that surprising place we call the imagination. The result is MISTER PIP. A novel of 13-year-old Matilda, her peers and the eccentric Mr. Watts who sweeps out the ruined schoolhouse and begins to read to the children each day from Charles Dickens’s classic novel.
