Justin Kramon
Dear Reader,
I'm thrilled that my first novel, FINNY, is being published by Random House this summer. The novel is a love story and coming-of-age tale about a misfit named Finny Short, whose relationship with her childhood love leads her on a remarkable adventure, spanning twenty years and two continents.
FINNY draws from a number of coming-of-age novels I love: THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP, CATCHER IN THE RYE, DAVID COPPERFIELD, and others. I wanted to fill my book with all those wonderful adventures and funny moments and lively characters, but instead of having the book be about a young man, I was interested in telling one of these classic stories about a young woman coming into the contemporary world. We follow Finny through boarding school and college and her adult life in New York and Paris, as she has to negotiate the challenges of love and loyalty, family and friendship, innocence and disappointment.
The advance reviews for the book are just coming in. Publishers Weekly says, "[An] impressive debut...Kramon is clearly a find." John Burnham Schwartz writes that FINNY is a "fresh, appealing, funny, and big-hearted first novel." Galley Cat says, "It is a super summer book; buy it as a beach book or a rainy day book, but buy it." And National Book Critics Circle-Award Winning author Jim Crace calls FINNY "a debut novel of exceptional achievement."
The novel is being published in trade paperback, making it affordable for book groups. I'd be delighted to visit any book group in driving distance of Baltimore, Philadelphia, or New York, and if I can't visit in person, I'm happy to arrange a video or phone chat. See my website for the reading group guide.
I'm conducting a drawing for FIVE FREE COPIES of FINNY. Please write me at justin@justinkramon.com, with the subject line FINNY CONTEST. If you include the name of your favorite coming-of-age novel and one sentence about why you love it, I'll enter your name twice in the drawing.
